Astrium launches the GEOELEVATION product suite

28 July 2011

Astrium launches the GEOELEVATION product suite, a comprehensive range of models providing accurate terrain height data
  • Customers will benefit from these precise and reliable data sets for applications such as infrastructure planning, crisis intervention, hydrologic modeling, 3D visualization and air traffic security
  • Data is available for any point on the globe, regardless of weather conditions or relief and the three core products of the GEOELEVATION suite are sold by sq km, framed to the customer’s AOI
  • The very high accuracy of GEOELEVATION suite products is appreciated by many institutional users (among them several MoDs, mapping administrations and international organisations, …)

The GEO-Information division of Astrium Services is pleased to announce the launch of a new comprehensive offer of elevation data:  the GEOELEVATION product suite. These elevation models are used for high-quality image orthorectification, multi-scale mapping, terrain knowledge, water body identification, flood modeling and 3D visualization.
GEOELEVATION is developed for professionals who depend on accurate terrain knowledge:
  • Engineering firms working on infrastructure development can complete feasibility studies more quickly and easily with accurate, up-to-date geospatial information.  This can speed up decision making, help evaluate global investments and control operating costs.
  • Civil security organizations can map flood hazard zones using digital terrain models to estimate slope and aspect flow-path and direction.  Flooded areas can be detected beneath vegetation.
  • For resource exploration, geological terrain analysis and 3D subsurface modeling help optimize field survey planning and improve assessment of natural resource potential.  Considerable time and money can be saved and extraction can be simulated efficiently.
  • “Our clients appreciate the flexible delivery options that adapt to their individual needs,” said Patrick Le Roch, Astrium GEO-Information Services' Divisional Managing Director.
“We aim to simplify the access and use of elevation data. For large scale mapping projects and military operations our Elevation30 is ideal thanks to its global coverage, high accuracy and data homogeneity. Derived from SAR satellite data, Elevation10 can provide regional 10m elevation models everywhere in the world, whatever the relief and weather conditions. For all projects that require a very high level of accuracy such as pipeline planning or flood modelling our LiDAR airborne based survey Elevation+ can provide 1m DEM and beyond.”
Three core products comprise the GEOELEVATION offer; customers use the right model for their specific application.
  • Elevation30 is ideal for defence, mapping and terrain modelling applications
    • Off-the-shelf 3D database available for more than 50 million km² worldwide
    • Up to 6m horizontal and vertical accuracy
    • Rapid delivery
  • Elevation10 is ideal for mapping applications, civil engineering, oil and gas exploration and development
    • Up-to-date elevation models from specific data acquisition, customised to customer’s AOI
    • Up to 5m absolute height accuracy at 10m grid spacing
    • Regional coverage available from only 500km²
  • Elevation+ is  ideal for high precision requirements such as engineering design phase, flood modelling
    • Highly detailed height data with horizontal spacing of 1m or better and vertical accuracy of 20cm LE90
    • One-off projects are quick to capture
    • Rapid acquisition and processing
The elevation data range relies on Astrium GEO-Information Services’ unique access to a multi-resolution, multi-sensor constellation with optical and radar satellites as well as airborne LiDAR capability.

TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X radar satellites acquire high-quality X-band radar images with an accuracy of down to1 metre independent of weather conditions and lighting. SPOT optical satellite imagery offers an optimum combination of resolution and coverage. With four sensors currently in space and five more planned in the next five years data continuity is secured until at least 2023. Astrium also owns and operates airborne sensors. LiDAR is the most cost-effective, accurate height data in production from airborne systems, with the ability to generate accurate terrain models in the presence of all but the most dense vegetation cover.
